AggLayer is an aggregation layer developed by Polygon Labs to address the challenges faced by blockchains, such as scaling limitations and fragmented liquidity. It aims to unify the blockchain landscape by creating a world of secured L1 and L2 chains that function as a single chain.
AggLayer has two main functions. Firstly, it aggregates Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZK Proofs) from all connected chains. This helps ensure the safety of near-instant cross-chain transactions. Secondly, it enables the aggregation of liquidity, providing access to a large pool of unified liquidity. This is beneficial for both developers and end users.
By maintaining full sovereignty and accessing unified liquidity, AggLayer offers advantages for L1 and L2-connected chains. Developers can reach users in aggregate, and users can interact with dApps on different chains seamlessly. This creates a user experience that is similar to the internet.
The introduction of AggLayer is a step towards a more efficient and interconnected blockchain ecosystem. It aims to overcome the limitations of modularity and fragmentation, providing a unified and scalable solution. The first version of AggLayer is set to launch in February 2024, with future versions supporting asynchronous cross-chain transactions.
